Young and insecure, Detective Daniela "Dan" Neely fights daily to earn respect in a Boston Police Department steeped in traditions as old as time. She works obsessively, determined to crack the big case-a recent string of deaths that plague the city-to prove that her father, a local pharmaceuticals magnate, didn't buy the position for her.
When she is called to the crime scene of the newest victim, a beloved friend with a secret past, her determination morphs into an icy resolve. Dan knows the murderer must be found at any cost, because Dan comes with a past of her own---and someone knows it. Has it come back to haunt her too? A failed attempt on Dan's own life tells her that someone will stop at nothing to get what they want. But what is that?

Cyn Lawrence has written a smart, surprising whodunnit about detective Daniela “Dan” Neely working to prove her best friend’s death was a murder and not one of the “Virgin Suicides” sweeping New England. Racing against a deadline imposed by her police chief, and wary of a possible stalker, Dan zeroes in on a possible culprit while trying to determine if the FBI agent she’s paired with is trying to help or hinder her investigation.
This high-action, suspenseful novel drew me in and kept me reading. Mystery novels are well outside of my preferred genre, but thanks to a well-thought-out plot, I found this one thoroughly enjoyable. Also, in our current political climate, it was refreshing to read a story sympathetic to a successful Trans woman. The story had me thinking and guessing beginning to end.
